The Dictionary
Thanks to the unflagging enthusiasm and tireless industry with which, amid a host of other preoccupations, Father Dinneen has worked at the Dictionary all through the summer, the Texts' Society hopes to be able to fulfil its promise to place the work on the market early in August. The entire text is now in type, and runs to 800 closely-printed pages. When the Preface, etc., are added, the volume will contain in all some 820 or 830 pages of matter.
"Use is second nature," and one finds it difficult to realise that the era in which, for practical purposes, O'Reilly has been the only dictionary within reach of Irish students is about to pass away. It is only when writers and students get Father Dinneen's admirably planned and carefully edited work into their hands that they will be in a position to guage the extent to which its publication will revolutionise the conditions under which Irish study has hitherto been carried on.
A removal of the intolerable handicap under which Irish writers, editors and students generally have so long laboured ; a consequent added impetus to Irish writing and scholarship ; the substantive settling of the orthography of the language ;—these and other results we look to from the publication of the Dictionary. Those who have not yet ordered copies are again reminded that the price is 7s. 6d: and that orders may be sent through the Gaelic League.
